Sleeping Giant is a smart son of Dalakhani out of Danehill mare Special Delivery. His full brother, Sano Di Pietro, showed promise as a three year old winning over 12f at Longchamp on good ground and followed up with two seconds in Listed races on soft ground. An injury kept him off the track for all of 2012 but Alain De Royer-Dupre thinks enough of him to have kept him in training for 2013. The Dalakhani on Danehill cross has had some success, most notably with Duncan, winner of the Irish St.Leger. Moldowney, who joined Bedford House Stables at the end of 2012 also shares this parentage with Sleeping Giant. Special Delivery was a winner at three and four but her best effort came in the Dahlia Stakes (newly granted group 3 status in that year) at Newmarket. John Dunlop’s Beneventa was the clear winner that day and our heroin lost 2nd by a neck to Brian Mehan’s Silence Is Golden. At 13 years old Dalakhani has already sired four classic winners amongst his 19 Group winners and his top scorers include Conduit, Reliable Man, Chinese White and the aforementioned Duncan. Dalakhani himself was a multiple Group 1 winner over 7-12f. Beaten only once, in the Irish Derby, his ultimate achievement was the 2003 Arc De Triomphe after which the Racing Post summed him up: “The winner of eight of his nine races, Dalakhani is versatile as regards ground, possesses an incisive turn of foot and is a credit to his connections.” A pinch of one and a dash of the other should make a nice horse!
